Eco-Experiences: Rice Planting & Harvesting

6-Day Rice Planting Experience (June - July)

Come experience the life of a rice farmer in a traditional organic rice farm amidst the beautiful hills of Northern Thailand. You'll enjoy peace and tranquility, fresh air, wonderful sounds of nature, and healthful farm cooking. The wet months of June/July is the joyous season of sowing, marking the start of a new rice planting cycle. We'll guide you through the process of rice planting.

Itinerary:

Day 1:
We'll pick you at either Chiang Rai International Airport to Tigerland Rice Farm. After check in at our Farmer's Lodge, you'll get an orientation tour of the farm before dinner.
Day 2:
After breakfast, you'll be guided to prepare your paddy field for sowing. It means irrigating the field adequately with stream water, trimming the sides of the plot and leveling the soil. After a healthy dose of labor in the paddy, let's go for a dip at the river for relaxation. For dinner, you'll enjoy a bamboo rice feast.
Day 3:
This is a fun day of sowing when you'll transplant the rice seedlings from the nursery to the paddy field that you've painstakingly prepared the day before. You'll appreciate the back-bending effort of the rice farmers. We'll enjoy a evening out in Chiang Rai town and shop at the Night Bazaar.
Day 4:
You'll complete the transplanting and sowing of seedlings at your rice paddy by early afternoon, and stand back to proudly appreciate your effort. After lunch, we'll enjoy a stroll to a nearby Lahu Village and to experience the natural beauty and richness of the farm country - rivers, plants, fruits, vegetables and wild life. After dinner, we'll explore the paddy and see what creatures come alive there in the night. With luck, you'll see the magic of the fire-flies.
Day 5:
Your visit to Chiang Rai would be incomplete without an appreciation of the rich diversity of the Hill Tribes in this region. So we'll bring you on a tour to visit the Yao, Akha and Padong hill tribes to learn about their lifestyle and culture. In the evening, you'll learn Bamboo Weaving and you're welcome to weave as many items as you delight to bring home.
Day 6:
This is the day to bid farewell. We'll send you to the airport. If you wish to extend your stay to explore other parts of Thailand, we would be pleased to help you with travel arrangement.

6-Day Rice Harvesting Experience (October - December)

The dry, cool months of October/November is the happy season of reaping, marking the end of yet another year of gainful harvest. If you've planted the rice in June/July, we shall try to allocate the same plot for you to harvest your own rice. Holding a handful of golden rice grains, recollecting how you'd planted the rice seedlings into the paddy months earlier is truly a most delightful moment. You just can't help but treasure every grain of rice thereafter...

Itinerary:

Day 1:
We'll pick you at either Chiang Rai International Airport to Tigerland Rice Farm. After check in at our Farmer's Lodge, you'll get an orientation tour of the farm before dinner.
Day 2:
You'll hit the welcoming rice paddy ripe for harvest. You'll learn how to reap with a sickle (curve knife) and stack up the rice stalks for drying under the sun. In the afternoon, you'll enjoy a wade upstream in the forest river which is the source of irrigation water. We'll have a bamboo rice dinner over campfire in the evening.
Day 3:
You'll continue to reaping in the morning. After lunch, you learn about bundling and threshing. It's a particularly satisfying day as you'll see your first pile of golden rice grain by the end of your thrashing effort. We'll visit Chiang Rai town and shop at the Night Bazaar in the evening.
Day 4:
You'll experience the tradition manual method of Pounding to de-husk the rice grains. Winnowing is the process to separate the resulting brown rice from the husk. We'll also teach you how to look for earthworms and use them as baits to do fishing at a hole with a bamboo pole. After lunch, we'll go trekking in the bamboo forest.
Day 5:
This is a day out from the rice farm to allow you to take in some sights and places of interest in Chiang Rai - you may choose either a tour in the Mae Kok River with elephant ride or a city tour.
